Fuyu Fest is a Portland, Oregon sake festival celebrating Winter in the Pacific Northwest and hosted by Sunflower Sake.

Entering our third year, Fuyu Fest is an exploratory, educational, PNW Winter-themed sake festival, with activities, demos, food, artists and cultural activities in addition to tasting over 85 (nearly 100!) different sake with the passionate people who make and import them! Local food, coffee, snack and treat vendors will have lunch & snacks available from 1PM onward (a great opportunity to check in early!), while passionate sake professionals will fill your glasses and your minds from 2-5PM.
20% of ticket revenues are donated to elder lunch and community program Ikoi no Kai.

Ticket Types:

There are two ticket types before February 1st: Early Bird ($75, before 2/1/25) and Early Bird + Sakazuki (adds $39, for a total of $114). After 2/1/25, Early Bird pricing will be replaced with General Admission pricing ($85). Sakazuki, a type of sake cup usually associated with a more conical shape, are made by local artist Dwayne Sackey whose information follows. Sakazuki orders placed prior to 1/1/25 are guaranteed, but after 1/1 supplies will be limited and may sell out (he needs time to make them-- so he is only making a set amount! But he will be vending at the fest too and may have some extras.)

Activities

Sake Tasting
The heart of the fest: over 85 different types of craft sake to taste and explore, while learning from brewers and the folks who work with them every day.

Sake Brewers
Visiting representatives from Dewazakura, Heiwa Shuzo, Haccoba Craft Sake and Niida Honke will be at Fuyu Fest to share their sake and knowledge!

Food & Drink
Look forward to a cozy Winter menu from local food vendors Obon Shokudo, Not Umami's Cooking, Hey Day Mochi Donuts, Electrica Coffee and Reggie's Manga Cafe. Be sure to stop by Okome Kitchen as well, who are launching their brand new local amazake company at Fuyu Fest 2025!

Artists & local crafts
A beautiful slew of ceramics, leatherwork, Japanese knives, and other creations from our incredible community. Look for Dwayne Sackey ceramics, Erica Harada katazome stencil art, Sora Shodo calligraphy, Michelle Sparnicht ceramics, Casey Jonquil ceramics, and Yonezawa Leather & knives.

Demos and Experiences

OKAN LOVERS BAR with Okan Lover
From Tokyo-based okan (warm sake) restaurant Takasaki no Okan, Okan Lover is a project spreading the joy of sake through okan. At the OKAN LOVERS BAR, seated guests will experience a lineup of different styles of hot sake, techniques, methods, and styles, with the opportunity to ask questions and dive deeper.

Breakaway Sessions
Guests interested in diving deeper on specific subjects can pull away from the crowd and enter our breakaway classroom, where highly limited tastings and classes will take place. Guided by subject matter experts, these sessions will include exclusive producer horizontals, a look into the unique subculture of Japanese 'craft sake'-- not legally sake, due to added herbs and spices, as well as other subjects.

Shodo Performance
Multi-award winning Japanese calligraphy (shodo) artists Sora will conduct a live performance, inspired in the moment by the flavor and experience of the sake she is tasting. Sora's work, including custom calligraphy, will also be available for purchase at Fuyu Fest.

Reggie's Manga Lounge
Hidden in the atrium, take a break at Reggie's Manga Lounge: a relaxing, quiet zone to hydrate and chill, curated by our friends at Reggie's Manga Cafe, opening March 1st on NE Greeley in Arbor Lodge! The wonderful folks at Reggie's are bringing a mini manga library, egg salad sandos, loaded gachapon machines, vibes and goodies to one of our most exciting additions to Fuyu Fest 2025.

Sake nails đź’…

Local nail artist Andie @nailor_moon is setting up her table at Fuyu Fest and jazzing up naked nails with sake & Fuyu Fest-themed nail art! Simple designs are free to attendees, but more detailed designs will be available for purchase if you're feeling fancy. Andie is but one artist, so this experience will be limited to first come, first served on a reservation basis. So head over to Andie right away to grab your spot if if sake nails are your jam!

Collaborations

Commemorative Sakazuki 2025

Every year, Sunflower Sake collaborates with a local PNW artist to create a limited edition piece of functional art. Works like these add to your sake experience, bringing depth and beauty beyond the drink iteself, & contribute to the PNW artists’ community we are so proud of. Please note that Dwayne’s Pots are one of a kind due to the action of natural glazes, and as a result, commemorative sakazuki colors will vary. Your cup will be ready to pick up and use at Fuyu Fest 2025. You are still welcome to use/take a regular Fuyu Fest tasting cup in addition to your commemorative cup-- Fuyu Fest tasting cups are mass-produced, but made of natural materials like wood, bamboo or ceramic.

Artist Statement

“I do not aim for “flawlessness” – my work leaves a trace of a fluid, organic process and a human set of hands. Windswept trees, cold blue bodies of water & lichen-covered granite boulders intrigue &  inform my artistic palette. Gentle curves, textured surfaces, &  meandering lines speak through my art. Atmospheric, expressive brush strokes and luscious glazes mimic the timelessness of nature.”

Artist Bio

Sackey earned his BFA from Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2019. Merit-based scholarships supported him: the Gregori Jakovina & Larry McDonald Scholarship, the Ellice T. Johnston Scholarship, and the OCAC Community College Scholarship. In 2019, Sackey showed at the Multnomah County Justice Center & in 2021 he showed at the Oregon Governor’s mansion. Sackey was a recipient of the 2021 studio potter grant for apprenticeship alongside his mentor Chris Baskin. Sackey published 3 articles in Pottery Making Illustrated, one in 2021 & two in 2023, taught a workshop at Clay by the Bay in 2022, and demonstrated at NCECA in 2022.

Poster Artist 2025

Erika Harada (Instagram: @kimagureya_ )has crafted for us a beautiful, hand-sewn and dyed poster using the traditional katazome resist method. Her depiction of winter in the PNW, forest critters and sake festivities, is the pride of our 2025 festival and will be on display at the fest for all guests to see in person.
