This one of a kind sakazuki too perfectly resembles a rising sun of antique bronze, set against the cool snowy foreground of Mt. Fuji (or Mt. Hood?) to be believed. Entirely the result of custom glazes interacting at infernal temps, the serendipitous pattern is truly gorgeous and evocative.
Benio's delicate, paper-thin ceramic feels like the barest boundary between lips and sake. The wide mouth of the cup makes sake taste sweeter, and the gentle angle of entry created by the shallow sakazuki lets the sake flow over the tongue slowly, enhancing body and mouthfeel.
These cups are handcrafted by Ehime-trained Tokyo artist Benio Tomishima.Â
