This haunting sakazuki features a dusty rose interior with countless layers of texture and color, pastel cream, silver sage and darling little glaze crystals of tawny oat. Underneath: a unique, soft periwinkle with waves of undulating depth. The rim is purposefully irregular to provide the drinker with a range of different experiences. Sipping from one angle versus another, leads to slight changes in taste and texture.
The delicate, paper-thin ceramic feels like the barest boundary between lips and sake. The wide mouth of the cup makes sake taste sweeter, and the gentle angle of entry created by the shallow sakazuki lets the sake flow over the tongue slowly, enhancing body and mouthfeel.
These cups are handcrafted by Ehime-trained Tokyo artist Benio Tomishima.Â
