Sunflower's master plan for spreading the joy of sake rests on educating and supporting the hospitality/F&B community, who are the tastemakers for us all. For every one sommelier who gets excited about sake, I believe at least 10 others will learn from them and spread the joy themselves.

As such, private classes for your restaurant, bar, beverage program, tasting group or F&B community are scheduled separately and at a deeply discounted rate. In addition, while I'm happy to teach with your existing inventory, I may add samples to round out the lesson and add context and excitement to the category. In my experience, the most unusual sake is the most inspiring; lessons without these samples fall flat.

Class curriculum and tasting lineup will be discussed ahead of time and customized to your business, its menu, and its goals.


$100 base for up to 2 hours within the Portland metro area


$150 base (as restaurant/bar credit, subject to approval)

Tasting samples:

  • You provide: no charge 
    • Supplemental samples will be provided at cost (or I can provide you with an order list)
  • I provide: tasting list/budget approved ahead of time, charge is passed through at cost.
  • Happy to work with with you/your distributors to get comped or discounted samples wherever possible.

Your assistance is requested with setup, sample pouring and cleanup, which helps keep the cost down for all.  

Class size

20 is about the maximum recommended size while being able to teach effectively and have time to answer questions.


Classes can be hosted on-premise in a private room at the Olympic Mills Commerce Center in SE Industrial area, or off-premise at a location of your choosing. If pairing exercises are requested, advance tasting is required to assemble a collection of prospective pairings for workshopping with your team.


Monday: 9-5
Weekdays: 9AM or 10AM 
Sunday: by special arrangement


1:15 minimum active lesson time for instruction/tasting, ~30 minutes for Q&A/setup and takedown. For pairing exercises, allow an additional 60 minutes.


Classes are taught by Nina Murphy, owner and proprietor of Sunflower Sake. Her credentials are as follows:

  • WSET 3 Sake- Distinction
  • Advanced Sake Professional (ASP)
  • WSET 3 Wine- Distinction (top score in Americas and recipient of the Laithwaite's Award, 2019)
  • WSET Wine Diploma- Merit
  • Sake Scholar Course (SSC)
